Why does mindset matter? Why do they, the experts, say it’s everything? Let’s start with a story.
The foundation of a house determines the size and shape of the house. To be uber clear, the foundation is the concrete footing that supports the structure. It is vital to the house and without a great foundation the house would literally crumble.
I was once house hunting and fell in love with a house that had a cracked foundation. It was going to require lifting the entire house to rebuild the foundation. The expense, chaos, and timing felt like a nightmare and I passed on the house. My love for it died when I was taught the work required to make the house stable.
I love this as an analogy for the mind. It is a beautiful fit.
Your mind’s belief system is your foundation.
Let that sink in and process this.
Your mindset determines the size of your life. The size of your bank account, the size of your love life, the size of your life is determined and restricted to the size of your mindset. Your mindset is your foundation and it is created by your beliefs.
My mindset and belief system has been growing and that is when the analogy ends because house foundations only grow in Harry Potter movies.
It creates a tension in the body and life when the foundation grows. Easy enough to track logically right? Your entire life is shaped by what you believe.
I find I want to keep building and show you more but I also understand that this is a very big lesson in itself.
Let’s connect some more dots. What you believe can be wrong, wonky, fake, misguided, and full of shit. Believing that other people are not as valuable as yourself is garbage. You might think you don’t believe this way but if you have ever voted to control another person’s rights you might believe you know better than them.
When we make meaning in our life it is not usually grounded in reality. We start making sense of our lives the minute we are born. Much of what we determined happened before we were ten years old. Can you imagine using a cellphone that created it’s foundational operation system at ten years and just stopped there? Fifty years later it’s still there? Yeah, people are walking around exactly that immature.
They don’t realize it either because at ten there was no emotional development to take the nuances of life seriously.
This is to explain not shame. You can re-evaluate your beliefs daily. It doesn’t have to be hard either.
I do it constantly. I am always thinking in some way. It is a delight. It is not anxiety producing to think and connect the dots. It’s very normal to see something and have your brain translate it to make sense. If you believe that the world is flat then this is the lens you process through. If you think the world is round you process that way. One has science to back it up but both go through the same processes.
Which is how you can absolutely have wrong mindset without knowing it.
Bummer. The clues are there. Everywhere life isn’t working is a clue. Those are places that have beliefs that do not serve you, are against nature, or need to be healed from grooming or trauma.
When you belief that the world is out to get you, you behave completely different than someone who believes they are lucky and work to diligently capture their luck. Plus, we’re amazing and not limited so we can drive ourselves crazy being diligent, believing we’re personally lucky all the time, and that the world is out to get us all at once. This disorganization of the brain is totally normal.
This is why mindset work is brilliant. It asks you to start looking where life isn’t working or hurts and then uses new patterns of belief to fix the foundation.
For now though just enjoy thinking about how your beliefs are why your life is the shape and size it is. Your beliefs are your foundation. You can not be more or less than your foundation.
If you believe that women are silly and need a man to guide them, then you believe they need to be in a relationship as a woman to survive. If you believe that women are humans with the ability to be autonomous, then you see them as individuals not second class citizens in need of a keeper. If you are deeply Christians you might believe women are individuals while having the conflicting belief that men are superior due to them being made first. You don’t see women as the upgraded 2.0 model because that’s not how religion teaches the hierarchy structure of power here.
Yes, this is a heated topic for many but I am merely pointing out the chaos.
Pick a topic and start identifying how you believe and start to see how that has shaped your thinking and decision making processes that have led to the life you are living now.
Know that you can work one on one with me by going to my website www.drzeman.com but that you can do this at your own pace too. It’s faster and with more clarity when you work with a professional but I want you to do this no matter your budget. Look inside and start seeing what you truly believe and see how it has shaped your life.
Know that in order to be more, make more money, feel more powerful or confident, you have to see if your foundation is capable. You can’t grow bigger than your foundational mindset. This is why mindset is a big deal. This is why mindset matters.
